Description The Virgin of Autun, 30 cm

The Virgin of Autun, also called Virgin Bulliot, is a statue whose theme is quite rare: the Virgin Mary look at the Child-Jesus who has the size of a newborn. The drape of the habit of the Blessed Virgin is typically Burgundian.
The sculptor has beautifully rendered all the maternal tenderness of Mary for her Son and what a Son! Jesus, Son of the eternal Father and the Savior of the world. This maternal tenderness is reflected in the way she carries her child, in the position of the hands, especially the left hand and in her peaceful face which reflects the inner peace and contemplation and mystery she is experiencing: she is the mother of a son who is God; she is therefore Mother of God, in Greek Theotokos in Latin Deipara, as the council of Ephesus in 431 solemnly affirmed it.
The many images that we put, with close-ups on the face, allow you to contemplate this magnificent statue of the Virgin.
"The Blessed Virgin is still much better than the best of mothers, her heart is only love and mercy, she wants us to be happy, just turn to her to be answered." Saint Curé of Ars.
This statue illustrates the words of Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus: "She is more Mother than Queen".
This statue was carved during the last quarter of the 15th century; it comes from the Notre-Dame du Chatel collegiate church in Autun. It seems that this statue was commissioned by Canon Rolin, Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good. He was a great man of the service of his master. During the forty years he was chancellor, he enlarged the states of Burgundy which extended from Dijon to Bruges. For all that, this canon had a great concern for the salvation of his soul. He built the famous hospices of Beaune.
The original of this polychrome statue is currently in the Rolin Museum in Autun.
This statue of the Virgin of Autun is also available in polychrome: Statue of the Virgin of Autun polychrome .
