Description Virgin of Vladimir (detail)

This Icon of the Virgin of Vladimir represents a detail (close-up of the Mother of God and the Child Jesus) of one of the most famous icons of the Virgin Mary. The whole icon is also available on our religious shop at the following address: Icon of the Virgin of Vladimir
In this icon of the Virgin of Vladimir the most remarkable is undoubtedly the look of the Virgin, a look full of sweetness and veiled by sadness. This gaze is directed towards the outside, towards the spectator. It is an invitation to all of us to be involved, not to remain indifferent as a simple tourist. While carrying her Divine Son in her arms, the Blessed Virgin seems to contemplate the Passion of Jesus. The gaze of the Virgin Mary asks us what did you do with my Son?
Because of the richness of this look, this close-up icon of the Virgin of Vladimir is fully justified and is an invitation to link a dialogue of love with Mary and her divine Son.
A little history ...: It was in the imperial workshops of Constantinople that was painted at the beginning of the twelfth century the original painting of this icon. Shortly after, the imperial house made a gift to the Duke of Kiev. In 1155 she was transported to Russia in the city of Vladimir, which gave her her name. It is found 240 years later in Moscow, venerated in the Cathedral of the Assumption until 1917. It miraculously protected several times the holy Russia. It was placed in the Tretyakov art gallery of this city, the most famous museum of icons in the world.
This Virgin "Eleousa" which means "tenderness" is the icon that the Russian people cherish the most: no doubt it contemplates the tender affection of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus, whose faces come together in a sweet expression of intimacy. It is to this Mother full of tenderness that he likes to address this prayer:
"Poor sinners come to the Mother of God with fervor and fall on their knees with repentance, saying to her from the bottom of their hearts: O Our Lady, have mercy and help us, hurry up because we are overwhelmed by the large number of our sins; do not send us back, we have only you for only hope. "
(Liturgical Office for the feast of the Virgin of Vladimir)
