Description Icon of the Virgin of the Consolata

This icon of the Virgin Mary is an ancient icon dating back to the 5th century; it is a copy of the Madonna, Salvation of the Roman People, currently housed in the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome.
It was miraculously discovered beneath the rubble of an ancient church. In 1104, a young blind man from a noble family in Briançon had an apparition of the Virgin Mary, and in a dream he saw this icon buried beneath the rubble of an old church in Turin. He went there, found the icon and his sight. The miraculous nature of this discovery gave the icon a reputation as a miraculous icon. On the site of the discovery, a church was built in honor of the Virgin of the Consolata, where the icon was honored and venerated by the people. The Virgin of the Consolata became the patron saint of Turin.

Consolata means "consoled" in Italian or Latin. This term is well suited to the Virgin Mother, who by the Incarnation of the Divine Word in her womb on the day of the Annunciation was consoled from her ardent desire for the coming of the Savior. At last! He who had been promised to Adam and Eve, glimpsed in Jacob's star, promised to David, is here in Mary's womb. But the Virgin Mother knows that this Child is not for her alone, but she must give him to the world. Mary's attitude illustrates this truth by the way she carries the divine Son. She carries him as if seated on a throne, and shows him to us as if she were saying: "Behold your Savior, your Comforter". This icon should not leave us indifferent, and we can ask ourselves how we have responded to this call from the Virgin? How should we respond? In Mary's face, where there is a certain sadness, we can read the response of a part of humanity that welcomed Christ only to crucify him for his sins, like a certain number of Jews at the time of Christ who handed Jesus over to the Romans to be scourged and put to death on the cross.
