The statue of the Virgin with a bird is a subject quite common in the fourteenth and fifteenth century with certain variations: sometimes it is the Child Jesus himself who holds the bird in his hand, sometimes it is the Virgin herself. There are even models where the Blessed Virgin is represented without the Child Jesus; the origin of virgins to the bird would be inspired by stories from apocryphal books. Anyway, we can see in this symbolism an image of the solicitude of the Virgin for each soul represented by the bird. All the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary is applied to lead each person to Jesus, for the joy of the Child God and the eternal good of the soul and the body of the one who has had the happiness to be attracted by the beauty of the "divine" Mother. Mary is not called divine because she would be a kind of Goddess, but because she is the one that the Son of God, the second divine Person of the Holy Trinity, chose for Mother in order to unite in his own person a human nature to the divine Nature he possessed from all eternity. Since one is the mother of a person, and not of a nature, Mary is indeed Mother of God as it was defined by the Council of Ephesus in 431 (Mother of a person who is God, because she transmitted to him the human nature, but not the mother of the divinity which pre-existed of course!).
